Learning to Accept a Different Kind of Space

For many years, I was blessed with beautiful spaces to sew in. In both of our homes, I had rooms that were comfortable, finished, and truly mine. Dennis was always so good about helping me create those spaces—making sure I had what I needed and that everything felt just right.
That was a gift, and I know it.
Things Look a Little Different Now
Since moving, I’ve been given space in an unfinished area of the lower level where I live.
And I’ll be honest… it’s taken some getting used to.
It’s not polished.
It’s not what I had before.
And at first, it felt like something had been lost.
What I’m Learning
Bu, as I’ve spent more time there, something has shifted.
I’ve realized that as we age, change isn’t optional. It comes whether we’re ready or not.
And we get to decide how we meet it.
We can hold onto what used to be…
Or we can start looking for what still works.
Finding What Still Works
For me, that has meant focusing on the small things that make my space usable again.
Being able to sit down and sew.
Having my fabric within reach.
And even something as simple as being able to see the rulers I use every day without digging for them.
That last one surprised me.
It’s such a small thing—but it’s made the space feel more settled, more workable… more like mine.
A Work in Progress
My space isn’t finished.
It may never look like what I had before.
But it’s where I am right now—and I’m learning to work with it instead of against it.
And maybe that’s what matters most.

A Thought to Leave You With
We don’t always get to choose the changes in our lives.
But we do get to choose how we respond to them.
So I’ll ask you the same question I’ve been asking myself:

Is your space helping you enjoy quilting… or making it harder than it needs to be?
